FINGERPRINT HINGE LIFTER
DIRECTIONS
Steps:
1. Open hinged lifter so that the arrow points to the upper right Arrow and printing are on the plastic cover.
2. With the thumb and forefinger, peel off the transparent cover, starting at the upper right corner where the arrow points.
3. The tacky side of the lifter is then carefully placed over the latent powdered image or prints. Rub the plastic sheet lightly, then lift off the powdered print. Note that the * (star) is facing you when lifting the latent print.
4. The lifted print is then covered with the hinged cover, and then protected from scratches or dirt.
The best way to cover a latent print after lifting is to place the lifter on its back (with the adhesive side facing up), then form a curl in the hinged over and "roll" on the cover.
5. The lifted print is now permanently sealed. Keep the star facing you or facing up, and the latent print is in its positive position, just as it was found on the surface.

Refer to your Criminalistics Learning Simulation for evidence submissions and criminalistics related reports. Use your imagination and the model reporting systems that the instructor provided. You are in charge of the case and have the option to create your own scenario.

Complete the preliminary report, follow-up report and all related laboratory analysis reports. Key contributors are obviously the pathologist, forensic anthropologist and DNA/Serology experts. Obviously, there are additional personnel who play a significant role and make a contribution to the investigation.

Alison Jones, DOB June 15, 1982, became engaged to Jamie in December of 2001.

At 12:00 noon a 911 call was received from Alison Jones who said. "My fiance has been missing and I believe his body can be located in Nay Aug Park." At approximately 12:10 pm the first police officers arrives on the scene. He notified the CSI Unit. He discovered human skeleton remains adjacent to the roadway. The CSI Team established that there was sufficient evidence to regard the death as suspicious or a probably homicide. The investigators closed-off the scene and began processing the evidence.

Below please find very important details concerning the gravesite excavation problem at Nag Aug Park:

1. We will meet at 12:00 NOON. (across from the museum at the picnic table next to the carousel)
2. Arrive on time. Late arrival complicates the process, causes confusion and is unfair to others as they move forward through the various learning stations.
3. Bring a camera with you and film. A disposable camera will be fine. (Digital cameras work best)
4. Bring a face mask for biological hazards.
5. Bring rubber gloves.
6. Bring a ruler and paper.
7. Bring a notebook.
8. Bring pencils and pens.
9. Bring scissors.
10. Bring index cards.
11. Bring anything else you can think of that might prove helpful.

I am not sure what the weather report is going to be for next Sunday. However, please remember that you will be outside for entire time. Please wear warm, comfortable, appropriate clothing based on weather conditions. Yes, you may bring water with you to drink. Consider bringing rain gear, hats, gloves, scarfs...if it is windy, rainy, chilly, snow flurries, etc., etc. As you know, the weather conditions during this time of year are subject to sudden shifts in temps.
I do not coach or teach while the problem is being conducted. I have enough to do in organizing and running the problem. Therefore, come prepared to think on your feet, participate and problem-solve. Of course, you may talk to each other and work together as a group. That is the whole idea. I cannot entertain questions from everyone while the problem is in process. Please do not approach me with questions. I am placing former investigative process students in charge of individual stations.

Question: Can we make-up our own preliminary and follow-up reports?
Answer: I expect that much of your reports will evolve from your creativity and imagination. That's fine. However, the basis for your reports stems from our investigation conducted at Nay Aug Park. In addition, you will find information regarding your case posted on the BlackBoard Website. Your investigation is continuing and is in the follow-up phase. Obtain the information from the information found on the website that will help build your case scenario. Look at your checklist for requirements concerning evaluation for this course. You should be working on:
1. Lab request form
2. Results form -- i.e., blood sample
3. Your preliminary report should be completed
4. Review your website for additional details
5. Now is the time to start your follow-up or supplementary report
6. You can make-up investigative statements from suspects and others
7.

Don't forget your forensic entomology report

THE SYNOPSIS
The synopsis is a brief executive summary primarily directed toward management and leadership. They simply do not have time to read the entire report.

In other words, the synopsis is a summary of the main points of the case. It is condensed and an account of the core of the investigation (in a nutshell). The synopsis supplies identifying information on the offender, victim, location, date and time of the offense. It is the who, what, why, when and where of the report. Please refer to the model I presented in class for your convenience.

	FINAL LEARNING EXPERIENCE



	Final Learning Experience - Criminalistics Course The final learning experience is directly under your control and an opportunity to earn an excellent grade! Things to remember about the assignment: I read everything and therefore do not expect to review papers that are similar or copied for others. 2. The assignment is based on the gravesite excavation project in Nay Aug Park. That scenario is the backdrop for all papers, including your scientific analysis reports. In other words, the evidence you collected at the scene is considered the standard. I am sure that some students will be more creative and include additional samples. 3. I am giving all students the flexibility to create witnesses and suspects that enhance our scenario. 4. The background information and followup report will vary from student to student as well as the scientific reports. THINGS NOT TO DO: 1. Submit a police report you have obtained from a police file, Internet or agency. 2. Submit a report that sounds nothing like our Nay Aug Park scenario. 3. Submit the same or modified report I gave you as an example. 4. Submit a report you downloaded at the last minute from the Internet on juvenile delinquency or criminology. 5. Submit a paper that has been rotated throughout the University. 6. All of the above submissions will cost you the entire 300 possible points plus the 100 points earned at the gravesite excavation problem.



	STAGE #1 OF THE INVESTIGATION After conducting the preliminary investigation, you should have accomplished the following tasks: A. The initial seizure of two pieces of evidence including: (1) yellow jacket, and (2) blood DNA sample. THE EVIDENCE BAG WILL BE SUBMITTED AT THE END OF THE SEMESTER WITH THE APPROPRIATE PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION REPORT, FOLLOWUP REPORT AND ALL RELATED LAB REPORTS. * When you submit your final report, only submit the yellow jacket sample secured in the plastic vile and placed in the sealed evidence bag. * Check page #7 of your criminalistics learning simulation for directions and instructional practice sessions. * Submit the long evidence custodial form with the proper annotations and chain of custody SIGNATURES. * In addition, submit your laboratory request form for analysis. YOU SHOULD HAVE COMPLETED ALL OF THE PAPERWORK MENTIONED ABOVE BY THIS TIME, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE PRELIMINARY REPORT, FOLLOWUP REPORT AND FINAL LAB REPORTS. ADDRESS THESE ISSUES AS THEY UNFOLD. IF YOU WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MOMENT, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO REPRESENT YOUR ABILITIES WELL ON THE FINAL EXAM. FOLLOW THE POSTED CLUES. THEY WILL BE HELPFUL IN THE REPORTING PROCESS.
